Competition-winning team effort modeling 130+ Dartmouth campus buildings in SketchUp/Google Earth.
The Competition
After Google’s 2006 acquisition of SketchUp, the company launched a nationwide competition inviting college students to create 3D campus models using the software and geolocate buildings in Google Earth. Seven winning teams would receive invitations to a SketchUp seminar at Google’s Palo Alto headquarters, with their models added to Google Earth’s official buildings layer.
The Project
I led a team of 10 students who:
- Captured over 2,000 photographs
- Modeled more than 130 buildings across Dartmouth College
- Completed the work within approximately two months
The Result
Our team was selected as one of seven winning teams from 350 total submissions. The Dartmouth campus became visible in Google Earth’s 3D buildings layer.
