My experience with chip carving, a traditional folk art technique found worldwide.

About Chip Carving

Chip carving involves geometric patterns composed of 2, 3, or 4 sided pyramid shaped chips that are carved from surfaces, typically with a single knife. Each chip emerges as an individual piece and can embellish large architectural surfaces or smaller decorative items like boxes and frames.

The Process

Carving Process

Designs are lightly marked in soft pencil beforehand. The carving process involves:

  1. Initial cuts made inward with the grain
  2. Subsequent cuts maintaining grain flow
  3. Final cuts for safety
  4. Removal of completed chips

My Work

Most of my pieces are created in butternut wood. The portfolio demonstrates various techniques beyond chip carving, including Celtic knot designs and relief work.
